  • The legitimate son of Gloucester.
  • He is betrayed by his illegitimate brother Edmund, and is forced to run away from his own home.
  • Edmund had convinced Gloucester that Edgar was out for Gloucester's life.
  • He takes on the disguise of a crazy beggar that was just recently released from a crazy house. He names himself Poor Tom and rants about the devil and other gods and creatures. He smears mud all over himself and runs around in rags.
  • Edgar comes into contact with King Lear during the storm, and King Lear believes he is a wise prophet.
  • Edgar challenges Edmund and beats him, killing the traitor.
  • Albany awards Edgar and Kent with their previous titles and property, along with more honors that they deserve for their actions.
